What is CareIn?


CareIn is a communication device that connects an elderly’s home to a community center/ library. The device allows the younger generation to send an affectionate greeting or express their confusion anonymously while the elderly will have have a chance to respond. The social networks will be built for the elderly to prevent the feeling of isolation by giving a sense and purpose though action.

Where is the Problem Space?


• There are 1.2 million chronically lonely older people in the UK. (Age UK 2016, No-one should have no one)

• Over half (51%) of all people aged 75 and over live alone. (Office for National Statistics 2010. General Lifestyle Survey 2008)

• Two fifths all older people (about 3.9 million) say the television is their main company. (Age, U.K., 2014. Evidence Review: Loneliness in Later Life. London: Age UK)

• There are over 2.2 million people aged 75 and over living alone in Great Britain, an increase of almost a quarter (24%) over the past 20 years. (ONS)

How does it work?

For younger users:

The design has to be safe for the older generation. The identity of who’s signing up for the app has to be verified with a library or community center closed by in the stage of signing up. Then, the designed card is also needed to be reviewed before sending. However, your personal information will be kept in privacy. These processes are for ensuring safety within the communication.

For the elderly users, this handy size device is provided with an easy user experience design. It must be simple to learn and use, especially as some elderly people can have learning impairments or disabilities. By simply tapping on the top white part, the function of printing the younger generation designed card will be activated. Then, the elderly can hand-write their response and slide it back to the device. It will scan and send the content back as similar as a fax machine.

For elderly:

On the one hand, the main function of our system is to provide relief from loneliness for the elderly, but not to necessarily cure it. Whether it is used to connect friends, loved ones, or strangers alike, the goal of CareIn is to provide a way for people, who are unable to leave the home, to have contact with the outside world. On the other hand, CareIn provides the younger generation a simple, efficient, and playful way to volunteer in spreading love to the elderly. Through this, one of the aims will be to try to have both users keep using the object, and not, after its novelty has waned, casting it aside. To do this, it will be centered on establishing solid relationships for all users.
